GADDIS GAMME PROGRAMME
GADDIS GAMME, GIRLS CAMP PROJECT
For schoolgirls in Marsabit, holidays are a breeding ground for all manners of gender-based abuses. They are often exposed to early marriages, FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), early and unprotected sex, and nonconsensual sex. These abuses are compounded by the persistent gender-based vulnerabilities such as educational enrolment that marginalizes them and household chores that steeply occupy them as compared to the boys in unhindered societal patriarchy. Girls replace household maids during school recess.
To avert these girl child challenges, Mama Guyo Foundation has been implementing‘Gaddis Gamme’ (Girls Camps) in different sub-counties in Marsabit. The Girls Camp provides an exciting opportunity for girls aged 12 – 15 years to have peer counseling, professional training, and role model mentoring workshops that will inspire them, enrich their values, enhance their life skills and capacitate them to demand their rights. The workshop is facilitated by girl child mentors and professional counselors
GADDIS GAMME (GIRLS CAMP) PROGRAMME-AUGUST 2023 RECESS
We conducted two Girls Camps in August 2023 during the school holidays in the North Horr sub-county at Turbi Girls High School from 18th-25th and Sololo at Dr. Guracha Memorial Girls High School from the 22nd to the 25th of October 2023.
The camps subjected 345(165 and 180) girls to intensive training, awakening their potential to take active roles advocating for their inherent rights, improving their livelihoods, and developing their communities.
The girls learned their rights, prevention of violations, and life skills development; they were provided with dignity kits for personal, sexual, and reproductive health needs; and established girl’s rights peer leaders, advocacy clubs, and networks in schools in Marsabit County.
So far, we have conducted seven major camps across Marsabit County, graduating 1,645 adolescent girls.
Gaddis Gamme (Girls Camp) Programme – December 2024
During the December 2024 school holidays, we successfully conducted two transformative residential camps in Laisamis and Saku Sub-Counties, training 200 adolescent girls at each camp. These young leaders were equipped with critical knowledge and the confidence to effect positive changes within their communities.
Since its launch in 2018, Gaddis Gamme Programme has hosted 10 camps and positively impacted the lives of 2,045 girls across Marsabit County. By fostering resilience, promoting education, and encouraging personal growth, the programme continues to empower girls to become ambassadors of change in their schools, homes, and society.
